Industry turns out for huge celebration at the fifth annual EuropaProperty SEE Real Estate Awards Gala

The fifth annual EuropaProperty SEE Real Estate Awards, which highlighted some of the best and most accomplished companies and projects in the SEE region for 2009, gave the region a timely boost by giving away an impressive 26 awards.

The awards gala held on May 27th at the five-star Radisson BLU Hotel in Bucharest, brought together some of the top-performing firms from the entire major SEE market sectors. The award winners were selected by the esteemed members of the EuropaProperty SEE Real Estate Awards Academy.

The big winners of this year’s event, which saw a lot of companies collect more than one award, were agency Jones Lang LaSalle and developer AFI Europe, both companies walked off with three prizes, the largest hauls of the night.

Jones Lang LaSalle received awards in the categories of Office and Retail Agency of the Year and it was voted Overall Company of the Year. “I would just like to say I’ve had a fantastic time and met some fantastic people,” commented Jones Lang LaSalle’s Troy Javaher on the company’s night of recognition. “We look forward to an amazing future in the region and we would like to thank everyone who has supported us all the way.”

AFI Europe won two awards for their shopping centre project in Bucharest AFI Palace Cotroceni. The project was awarded Shopping Centre of the Year and was also voted Overall Project of the Year. The developer also picked up the Retail Developer of the Year.

The Overall Professional of the Year award went to one of the region’s real estate veteran’s Bryan Jardine of Wolf Theiss. On collecting the award he said: “To win this award is a great honour, thank you very much.”

Other big winners included Helios Phoenix, who won Warehouse Developer of the Year and Industrial Development of the Year for Olympian Park Brasov. Other projects awarded on the night included Atrium European Real Estate’s Militari Shopping Center in Romania for Retail Park Development.

GTC, who have been very active in the region, walked away with the Office Developer of the Year and Overall Developer of the Year awards. Office Development of the Year went to Modatim Investment’s City Business Centre in Timisoara. Mivan also scored a brace taking away Residential Development of the Year for NewTown and consequently Residential Developer of the Year.

A big cheer for the winners of the Property Management Firm of the Year went to DTZ, who also won Warehouse Agency of the Year. “Thank you very much we’re very honoured,” said the company on accepting the award. “We’re surprised that this year could end up so well. I would like to thank our clients and investment funds who have had the courage to buy product in 2009.”

Gardiner & Theobald was awarded Professional Service Provider of the Year and Project Management Firm of the Year. The firm’s triumphant managing director, Mark Rea, said: “I’d like to thank our clients for using us and members of our team. It’s a great honour.”

Other awards were presented to BCR as Bank of the Year. Chapman Taylor picked up Architectural Firm of the Year and Salans was awarded Law Firm of the Year. An additional agency award went to Colliers International for Residential Agency of the Year.

This year saw a new section to the awards with the inclusion of the Romania Green Building Council’s Green Awards. The three winners were awarded for their innovation and sustainability in green projects and companies. The winners in this inaugural section to the SEE awards were Naturalpaint, Katja Perrey Landscapes and ModaTim’s City Business Centre.

The gala dinner was preceded by a series of high impact panel discussions on the main issues affecting the SEE markets in Romania, Serbia, Croatia and Bulgaria. Speakers and participants agreed that the region should see the start of a recovery in 2011.
