Ski bargains to be found in Eastern Europe
14 October 2009
Eastern European countries offer bargain ski holidays this winter, according to a new report.
The Post Office surveyed items including lift passes, meals, drinks and equipment hire and found that the Poiana Brasov resort in Romania is the cheapest option for skiers at a cost of £195.76.
Bulgaria, Slovakia and Slovenia were also found to be relatively affordable as winter sports destinations, but the research revealed that some major European resorts have become cheaper this year as well.
La Thuile in Italy was found to be the most affordable of the mainstream destinations, while Courchevel in France has reportedly become 24 per cent cheaper since the 2008-09 winter season.
Prices have also dropped in the US resort of Vail, meaning it is now more affordable than Banff in Canada and Verbier in Switzerland.
Post Office head of travel services Sarah Munro said: "French ski resorts have responded well to the pressures imposed by the strong euro by slashing prices and Courchevel now rates as one of the cheapest eurozone ski destinations as a direct result.
"While bargain hunters will still find the lowest prices in Romania and Bulgaria, price should not be the only issue when planning a ski holiday. It's important to choose a resort that matches your ability and expectations."
